Globalstar LLC, one of the world`s most widely used handheld satellite service provider for both voice and data, has offered 911 services to its customers for the past five years, beginning well before the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulation mandated 911 service for satellite service providers starting in February 2005. The FCC requirement now in effect obligates all mobile satellite services to provide basic 911 emergency capabilities. Globalstar, a pioneer in this effort, has offered emergency services in the United States and Canada since the company's service launch in 1999 and has recently upgraded its service to better respond to emergency situations. Globalstar routes all emergency calls to a contractor's call center where the call information can be cross referenced to an updated North American wide PSAP (Public Safety Answering Point) database provided by Spatial Data of Irving, Texas. This database can be used to determine the location of the nearest PSAP or emergency answering point, using the GPS map coordinates or address information provided by the caller. Emergency personnel can then be summoned to respond as quickly as possible. Globalstar provides 911 Services throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Canada. About Globalstar Globalstar offers satellite telecommunications services, for both voice and data, from virtually anywhere in over 120 countries around the world.
